Established by the Feline Advisory Bureau in 1996 as the European Society of Feline Medicine (ESFM)

ESFM became ISFM in April 2010

ISFM(ESFM) has been running a feline congress in Europe since 2002, which has been attended by in excess of 570 delegates

The Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery is the official journal of ISFM and AAFP

about isfm

In 1996 the European Society of Feline Medicine (ESFM) was set up to provide a veterinary focus for feline medicine in Europe. Since then the Society has grown rapidly. It established and publishes the only peer-reviewed feline veterinary journal, the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, which now ranks very highly among veterinary journals. It holds an annual feline veterinary conference in Europe (attended by delegates from around 30 different countries), as well as collaborating with a number of other respected organisations to provide feline content for their conferences.

As a result of widening interest from beyond Europe, and to reflect the true scope of the Society, the European Society of Feline Medicine (ESFM) has now become the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM).

The aims of ISFM mirror the well established aims that have characterised ESFM since 1996 but with a broader geographical remit and taking into account recent developments within and outside the profession.

ISFM will be the veterinary division of the charity the Feline Advisory Bureau (FAB) and is operated from FAB's office in the UK. FAB has existed as a charity for more than 50 years in the UK and has worked closely with the veterinary profession during that entire period. ISFM is non-political and non-profit making but will campaign on relevant feline issues.

For the sake of clarity, we have organised our material and approach to its distribution so that all material and activity that is targeted at the veterinary profession appears under the ISFM logo and all consumer-facing information appears under the more consumer-friendly name of fabcats.

isfm aims
  • To provide a worldwide resource for veterinarians on feline medicine and surgery but additionally to provide information on the wellbeing of the whole cat and to provide information practitioners can use with clients beyond the consulting room
  • To continue to publish a top quality scientific and clinically orientated journal
    – the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery – carrying both relevant research and practitioner-orientated reviews
  • To run successful conferences and provide other cpd opportunities on an international scale
  • To develop an internationally recognised practitioner-orientated feline qualification
  • To provide cpd in feline medicine and surgery
  • To develop guidelines and policies on important and relevant feline issues
  • To collaborate with veterinary cat groups wherever they may be, and share information and expertise. Where national groups are present, to establish formal lines through National Partnerships
  • To raise the profile of ISFM and its National Partners and to increase their reach and influence
  • To collaborate with other organisations involved with the health and welfare of cats
  • To encourage membership of ISFM
  • To influence clients through the vet and through client-facing materials
  • To encourage practices to become more cat friendly
  • To educate nurses/technicians on cats
  • To share knowledge of best practice
The ultimate beneficiaries will be cats everywhere
