Pain management in cats – a hot topic

Two of the main pain management speakers at ISFM’s congress in Amsterdam this June (17-20) have published joint papers on long term pain in cats and DJD-associated pain in cats in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (JFMS) in March. Duncan Lascelles and Sheilah Robertson are well known for their empathetic and knowledgeable approach to pain in cats and the articles are practical and easy to use following the new JFMS Clinical Practice design.

When the Clinical Practice issues of JFMS were launched at BSAVA in 2009, the (then) European Society of Feline Medicine (now International) looked at the most popular downloads from the previous 10-year history of the Journal.  Top and third were articles on pain management in cats – a subject often poorly addressed and, because cats make all efforts to hide signs of pain, all too often not taken seriously.

For this reason the topic was chosen for ISFM’s Congress this year and the speakers get a chance to explore and explain more fully their approach to pain management in this difficult species.

The second topic covered at the congress is another which can be poorly managed in cats – feline dentistry.  Well known dental specialists Philippe Hennet and Margherita Gracis will tackle those difficult feline dental problems and will run pre-congress wetlabs for those who are looking for practical experience.

There is the opportunity to attend pre-congress cpd and there will be the launch of ISFM guidelines on the use of the long-term use of NSAIDs in cats.

Ends                              March 26, 2010
